Can Kenya Tackle Rising Cybercrime?

Cybercrime in Kenya is rising at an alarming rate. In early 2025, over 2.5 billion cyber threats were detected, climbing to 8.6 billion by mid-year. Phishing scams, ransomware, and AI-driven attacks are among the most common, targeting individuals, businesses, and government systems.

To address this, Kenya relies on the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act (2018), alongside new regulations that aim to improve threat reporting, establish cybersecurity centers, and strengthen inter agency cooperation. However, concerns remain about the misuse of these laws, highlighted by the controversial arrest of a Kenyan developer in 2025.

On a regional scale, Kenya has partnered with INTERPOL’s Serengeti 2.0 operation, which has recently resulted in over 1,200 arrests across Africa. Yet, weak infrastructure, outdated systems, and limited public awareness still make the country vulnerable.

Kenya’s challenge is clear: it must strike a balance between stronger enforcement and protecting rights, while also boosting cyber awareness. With continued reforms and global collaboration, progress against cybercrime is possible, but it will require vigilance from both government and citizens.
